There aren’t many figures in the world of poker that would make even the sickest of high-rollers blanche, but some of the biggest names in the game certainly got a little giddy this week when they stumped up a phenomenal $100,000 AUD to play in Event 8 of the Aussie Millions.
The huge buy-in event certainly proved a bit too daunting for some, but 23 brave poker players were more than prepared to foot the bill and generated a monster $2.3 million prize pool in the process. Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Chris Ferguson and Tony G all stumped up the cash, but in the end all the big names came up short as Hong Kong hotshot David Steicke powered his way to the $1.2 million AUD first prize.
Steicke ran out a deserved winner from the minefield of poker’s best and brightest, defeating England’s Tony Bloom heads-up to scoop the title and bumper windfall. The Londoner took home over $500,000 AUD for his runner-up finish, with the remaining two prize pay-outs going to tournament pros J.C. Tran and Dan Shak – who earned around $300k and $200k respectively.
Despite the granite-hard field of opponents, Steicke is no stranger to lining up against poker’s big-hitters. The high-stakes pro recently notched up nearly $90,000 USD for his fifth place finish in the APPT Macau High Roller event and this latest victory has seen his life-time tournament winnings rise to just shy $1.25 million.
