John Phan has been awarded the Card Player and BLUFF magazine player of the year. The award was given to Phan after his extremely successful year where he won two World Series of Poker bracelets, one World Poker Tour title and over $2 million in prize money.
In 2008, Phan had his most successful summer ever, winning his first WSOP bracelet in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em event and his second in the $2,500 Deuce-to-Seven Triple Draw Lowball event one week later. He also won his first WPT at the Legends of Poker in August for $1 million in prize money.
Second after Phan was Full Tilt Poker pro David Pham who came second in the Card Player league and third in Bluff Magazine. Pham, who won the Card Player 2007 player of the year award, would have become the first player ever to have won twice in a row if he had won this year.
Also coming close to the title were John Juanda, Erick Lindgren and Erik Seidel who have between them each won a WSOP bracelet in 2008. Seidel also won the WPT, reached two WSOP final tables and finished second at the Aussie Millions Main Event.
Also in 2008, Phan reached two more WPT final times, finished 5th in the Bellagio Cup IV and 6th in the Bay 1010 Shooting Star event. In total throughout the year he had 14 cashes and his career tournament earnings are now over $5 million.
