Wayne Rooney Indulges in Gambling Splurge

Manchester United and England star footballer Wayne Rooney embarked on a gambling spree after England’s World Cup qualifier match in Belarus last month.
Before building up a £700,000 betting debt in 2006, he and a group of other United players blew £250,000 in the 235 Casino in Manchester a year ago. This most recent splurge took place in the same casino while Rooney was still feeling the luck after his win for England, and immediately after flying home from Eastern Europe, he hit the tables. Expecting his winning streak to continue, Rooney ended up leaving the casino extremely disappointed after having a run of bad luck.
A source from the casino said, “When Wayne walked in, a few people congratulated him on how well he had played a few hours before. He went straight to a blackjack table and started to play hands at the maximum—£500 a time. He was happy to chat to people and had a permanent smile on his face.”
But he rapidly deteriorated into a losing spiral. Before things got serious, he had a bit of a joke with the dealer, but when his fortunes didn’t change, all humour evaporated.
After blackjack, the 23-year-old player then moved onto the roulette wheel, hoping that his luck would change for the better. However things just went from bad to worse and the only thing that stopped him from losing a substantial amount more was closing time.
The source also said, “The club closed at 6am and he was £65,000 down. When he left he had a face like thunder, but at least he can afford to lose that sort of money. Everyone knows the risks.”
