UEFA Launches Investigation Unit for Match Betting

UEFA are set to launch a gambling investigation unit into allegations about 25 UEFA Cup matches, which are now being studied after irregular gambling patterns were seen.

David Taylor, UEFA secretary general, said, after a two day meeting with the UEFA executive committee, “We will be setting up a special investigations unit to look into situations reported to us in terms of irregular betting. There is a danger within our game but we will not let irregular gambling patterns or corruption affect the outcome of matches.”

The unit will be fully operation from next season and will be made up of experts who will be reviewing suspected irregularities in gambling on matches in European tournaments. Gianni Infantino, UEFA legal affairs director, said, “We will start recruiting immediately. We need additional expertise. We have set up the necessary tools to fight against this.”

Infantino has begun reviews of 10 matches from the current season and 15 matches from the previous season, which all took place in the preliminary rounds of the UEFA cup. He also called for the help of the police saying, “Sports governing bodies reach some limits in this matter and need full support from authorities who have access to information they don’t.”

Match fixing has previously received headlines after Portuguese teams Porto and Boavista were implicated in a corruption affair involving referees who reported being offered money and prostitutes to rig the match. UEFA follows in the footsteps of many other regulating bodies including The Association of Tennis Professionals, The International Cricket Council and the British Horseracing Authority who have all set up their own internal integrity units.
