Yashihiro Tasaka from Japan has become Japan’s first ever player to win a Pokerstars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour title. He came top out of 165 players after three days of play winning himself the Pokerstars.net APPT Seoul Championship trophy and $128,250 in prize money.
Other Japanese players were also successful in the tournament placing 2nd, 3rd and 5th in the tournament and taking home a share of the $400,777 prize pool. The tournament was held at Paradise Walkerhill Casino in Seoul, making it the only tournament this year to be held in Asia.
Tasaka said, “I am very happy to take home the APPT Seoul title tonight after a long game of play. I share this victory with my fellow countrymen who came across to South Korea to take home the title, especially Hidenari San who came second today.”
The APPT Seoul 2008 received a talented and well-known field including Greg Raymer, Hevad Khan and Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier all from Team Pokerstars Pro. In the field were players from 30 different nations and 48 players who had qualified online through satellites.
Jeffrey Haas, President of the APPT, said, “The second season of the APPT is showcasing the phenomenal growth of Poker is Asia. Firstly to stage the biggest ever tournament in Asia just three weeks ago in Macau and now to hold the only tournament on mainland Asia this year is a testament to that.”
The recent poker boom in Japan can be attributed to Pokerstars.net and their development of the Japan Poker League which was started in 2007 and since has created awareness of Texas Hold ‘em in Japan.
