PKR Ad Banned

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has banned a PKR television ad on the grounds that it glamorised gambling. The advert featured a virtual character laughing and pushing all his chips into the middle of the table, which they argue glamorises the high risks involved in gambling, thereby breaching Advertising Standards Codes.
PKR have retaliated saying that the ad is simply trying to display their PKR poker software and their unique characters that can be created in their character creation feature. They commented that their voiceover was a representation of a fair and balanced depiction of gambling who says, “I’ve come in over the top of pot-sized raises with middle pair, bluffed under the gun with four runners behind me, folded pocket kings on a hunch; I’ve survived bad beats, sick draws and cold decks.”
PKR argues that the voiceover spoke in an even and balanced tone, equally about winning and losing, and did not mention cash stakes or cash winnings. However the ASA concluded that the ad gave the impression that it was acceptable to take risks on a hunch and implied that poker can be played in a reckless way.
The ASA have not upheld a complaint that the ad was aimed to appeal to young players or suggest that gambling was a way to gain admiration or respect. PKR have been ordered not to broadcast the advert again in its current form.
PKR is a unique online poker site in its integration of actions such a poker tells, body language and player expressions.
