Steven Jacobs, also known as ‘Stevesbets’, has just won the PokerStars 25k Heads-Up No Limit event, receiving $560,000 for finishing first. In second place came Bertrand Grospellier, ‘ElkY’, who won $320,000.
Jacobs is a well-known online poker player who has also had success in live events. He finished 10th in the 2005 World Poker Finals main event winning $117,000 and has also finished in third place at a WSOP Circuit event held in Atlantic City for $132,000.
The winning hand of the event saw Jacobs holding double the chips of Grospellier with blinds of 3,200/6,400. The pair raised pre-flop until they were both all in. Finally it was revealed Grospellier had a pair of threes versus Jacobs’s pair of eights making Jacobs triumphant and able to take home his biggest prize so far. Grospellier also took home his third largest cash prize ever behind his $2m win at the 2008 Caribbean Adventure and his second place $400,000 cash at the EPT Copenhagen in 2007.
The event had 64 players in total and featured many recognised players including Greg Raymer, Daniel Negreanu and Tom Dwan. Many players were angered that the event had been capped at 64 players, however Pokerstars then back-tracked on their decision but the field did not reach 128 players. Instead of the first-round buy-ins, PokerStars instead decided to open up the tournament to the first 64 players to register, which meant that Sorel Mizzi and Chris Moneymaker, among others, were unable to play.
