The prize pool for the four-day event held at Palm Beach Casino reached €3.2 million. The €8,500 buy-in main event began on September 3 and consisted of two one-day contests. Play continued for 15 hours that day until a final table of eight was reached with Gus Hansen narrowly missing out finishing 9th. Play between the final eight continued until Roy and Swiss Claudio Rinaldi went heads up. Play then went on until 3.30am when after three hands, Roy was victorious with a pair of 9s against Rinaldi’s pair of7s. Roy won €1 m and Rinaldi also didn’t do too badly winning €500,000.
The Partouche tournament is France’s biggest and had a list of famous poker players attending this year including Hansen and Chris “Jesus” Ferguson. This proves that the popularity of poker in France is steadily increasing with the Partouche Poker Main Event €1m prize being the largest ever in France.
It was a big win for Roy whose previous winnings had only totalled $3,000, and who had only cashed twice before. It was an especially big win for Rinaldi as he is a much more establish player having played as a semi professional for the last two years. In 2007 he came 18th place in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure for $36,000.
