Big Boost For Bingo Halls

Bingo clubs got a shot in the arm last month when gambling minister Gerry Sutcliffe announced that they would be allowed to increase the number of £1 stake/£500 prize gaming machines from four to eight per bingo hall.
Numerous bingo halls have faced the threat of closure since the smoking ban kicked in, not to mention bingo’s online boom having an effect on bricks-and-mortar attendances, so the news is a welcome boost to halls around the country.
“Bingo clubs play a crucial role in many communities and we want to see that continue,” said Sutcliffe. “It is therefore of great concern that nearly 100 bingo clubs have closed in the last four years. I’m confident that allowing a small increase in bingo clubs ... will provide much-needed help to struggling clubs without putting public protection at risk. I hope to implement these plans by the end of the year.”
Bingo companies including Rank and Gala Coral are reliant on the demand for gaming machines during breaks in live play at bingo halls. Gala Coral said the law changes would “go some way to providing a sustainable future for bingo clubs.”
