SARS Scraps Singapore World Series

The Singapore International Cup, won last year by the Godolphin stable's Grandera, scheduled for May 17 at the Kranji track, has been cancelled. The Singapore leg of racing's prestigious world series had to be called off after fears of the spread of the SARS outbreak.
A joint statement issued by the Singapore Turf Club and the meeting's sponsors Singapore Airlines, said the pneumonia epidemic had forced the cancellation: 'The Club and Singapore Airlines deeply regret that the current situation arising from the SARS outbreak in the region has made this decision necessary.'
The Singapore race was the second leg of the 2003 World Series. The first leg is still due to take place in Hong Kong on April 27 with the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Sha Tin racecourse. The Hong Kong race has not been cancelled despite at least 94 deaths and 1,402 cases of SARS being recorded there. As the worst hit in the world a number of international entries have withdrawn, leaving the Group One event with a weakened field.
In comparison Singapore has had 14 deaths from the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) with 184 cases. Yu Pang Fey, President and Chief Executive of the Singapore Turf Club: 'All of us are naturally extremely disappointed. It was a very difficult decision to make but we believe it was appropriate under the circumstances.'
